CHANGES FOR 2008

·        Profanity will no longer be allowed when naming your derby mower.  We encourage you to be creative when naming your mower, however, mowers with names such as Brick Shithouse, Sum Bitch, or Your Mother’s Anus will not be allowed to compete in the 2007 derby.

• Electric start mowers are preferred, but are not required.  However, if your mower is a pull start, you must be able to restart your mower while remaining in your seat and your legs and arms inside of the safety cage.  Standing up or reaching down along the side of the engine to restart your mower will disqualify you from that heat.
• Bring your own tools for repairing your derby mower.  Pit space is limited, therefore only one support vehicle/ trailer will be allowed in the pit area per derby mower.  A pickup and trailer will not be allowed in the pit area to support a mower, only one or the other.

MOWER

 

• This is a lawn mower or lawn tractor demolition derby, not a utility or garden tractor demolition derby!  Oversized mowers will not be allowed to run.  Please closely follow the official rules to ensure that your mower is legal. If you have any doubt that your mower might be too large or a modification may not be legal, please call one of the contacts listed on the next page before the day of the derby.  If the judges rule that your mower is not legal at check-in time, you will not be allowed to run in this event!
• Must be a production riding lawn mower (no homebuilt units) with a belly-mount deck.  No front mount decks allowed.  Front or rear mounted engines are acceptable.  Mowers with , cast iron fronts, or zero turn radius will not be allowed to compete.
• All mowers must be numbered. Original, clever names are also strongly encouraged, but not required.  Use of profanity when naming your mower is prohibited.
• All framework and attachments for a bagger must be removed.
• ENGINE Air cooled engines only, limited to a maximum of 18 horsepower.  Engine must be stock or not greater than original stock engine size.  No internal engine modifications will be allowed.

• EXHAUST Exhaust modifications are encouraged, however all pipes must be securely mounted.  Broken or loose exhaust pipes will disqualify the mower from the heat.
• DECK The deck must be welded in the highest position.  Weld brackets and joints that are used to raise and lower the deck.  Use minimal extra metal, only if necessary.  Blades and belts must be removed.
• FRONT BUMPER must be added, no wider or taller than the frame rails of the mower.  The bumper must extend at least 3” and no more than 4” from the outer most edge of the hood.  The Bumper must be straight and perpendicular to the frame rails.  Curved or pointed bumpers will not be allowed.  The bumper cannot be made of cast iron or from a grader blade.
• REAR BUMPER also must be added, with all of the same rules as the front bumper applying.  The rear bumper must extend 3-4” from the rear most edge of the rear tires.
• TIRES  Mowers that have an original rear tire size of 23” X 9.5 or 10.5” X 12” are too large to run in this derby.  REPEAT- If your mower has or originally had a rear tire 23” tall or taller, it is too large and will be disqualified.  Factory tires or replacements of the same size must be used.  No tires in tires, liquid or foam filled tires, or solid tires.  All tires will be checked for air pressure at check-in time.
• SAFETY CAGE  All mowers must have a safety cage installed for driver protection.  Type of metal and the strength of the cage are left to the driver’s discretion.  However, the purpose of the cage is to protect the driver, not to reinforce the strength and durability of the mower.  Do not make your mower into a tank because you will be disqualified.  The cage (as well as the bumpers) must not extend in front of, along side of, or around the tires.  The tires must remain fully open and exposed. 
  • Safety cage must have at least 4 solid weld points to the deck or to the frame.  The top of the cage must come to just below the drivers knees.
  • The sides of the safety cage must be closed in along the driver’s legs with some type of sheet metal.
  • The cage must extend around the rear of the seat on tractor style mowers, and must have one solid brace to the rear frame or hitch.  On rear engine mowers, the cage should extend around the front of the drivers feet.
• CHASIS must remain stock.  No reinforcing or modifications will be allowed on the frame, suspension, axles, hubs, or drive train.  No lift mods.  All mowers must remain stock height.
• FUEL TANK  The fuel tank must be stock size or smaller, and must be covered with a wetted material such as burlap or cloth.  Tank may be moved to a more secure location if stock position is in a compromising area.  If the tank is at the rear of the mower, the rear portion of the safety cage should extend around the tank and filler neck.
• Mowers should have light sheet metal side shields tack welded or bolted to the open sides of the hood in case of motor explosion.
• The original seat may be replaced with a larger, more secure seat for driver protection only.  However, this is not a requirement.

 

  DRIVER

• All drivers must show a legal drivers license.  Therefore, all drivers must be at least 16 years old.  Drivers under 19 years of age must provide parental consent.
• Drivers must wear a helmet, gloves, long sleeves, long pants, and eye protection.  No open toed shoes.  These rules all apply to the ladies who wish to participate in the powder puff competition.  No exceptions will be allowed.
• All drivers must sign a waiver prior to the derby holding no one responsible but yourself for anything that may happen.  Enter at your own risk.

 

EVENT

·        Bring your own tools for repairing your derby mower.  Pit space is limited, therefore only one support vehicle/ trailer will be allowed in the pit area per derby mower.  A pickup and trailer will not be allowed in the pit area to support a mower, only one or the other. 

·        All mowers must pass inspection before the derby.  Entry and inspection will be from 11.00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

·        A pit meeting will be held shortly before the start of the derby.  All drivers and at least one member of your pit crew are required to attend- no exceptions.  Any questions or complaints can be voiced at this time.

·        The format and officiating of the mower derby will be the same as a regular auto demolition derby.

·        Direct hits to the drivers safety cage (especially the leg area) will not be allowed.  These hits will be treated like a direct hit to the driver’s door in an auto demo derby.  Drivers will receive one warning, then they will be disqualified for a second illegal hit.

·        Teams or sandbagging will not be allowed.  Driver must administer at least one hit every 60 sec or will be disqualified. 

·        The judges have the final say on all rules.

·         If you use your mower to trim your pony pasture, you might just want to stay at home….

 

ADDITIONAL EVENTS

 

POWDER PUFF

• A powder puff competition will be held after the finals of the demo derby if there are enough mowers and female drivers to compete.
• All of the same rules that apply to the regular demo derby also apply to the powder puff.
• A trophy and purse money will be awarded to the winner only.
